Membership

More than 250 doctoral researchers who are conducting their doctoral theses in the PIER research and competence fields or emerging topics are members of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School (PHGS). All of them have an affiliation to either DESY or the University of Hamburg (UHH) or a cooperation partner of the PHGS, and benefit from the international, interdisciplinary and supportive offers of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School.

Who can become a member of the PHGS?

To become a member of the PHGS, one is required to,

  • be admitted or plan admission as a doctoral researcher at the University of Hamburg or at any other university worldwide.
  • conduct the doctorate in one/more of the PIER research fields, competece fields or emerging topic.
  • have an affiliation with either DESY or the University of Hamburg (UHH) or a cooperation partner of the PHGS.

Types of membership at phgs

There are two types of membership at PHGS:

Full membership

For all doctoral researchers who fulfill the above mentioned requirements and who are not full members at another graduate school (e.g. DASHH, HELIOS, Excellence Graduate Schools Universität Hamburg, SFBs, GrK, etc.). This membership is a good fit for most PHGS doctoral researchers.

Associated membership

Only possible for doctoral researchers who have a DESY employment contract and who are full members in another graduate programme (e.g. Excellence Graduate Schools of the University of Hamburg or other universities, SFBs, GrK, IMPRS, etc). Members with a DESY employment contract whose main graduate school is HELIOS or DASHH do not need to apply for an associate membership of PHGS.

As a general rule, in case of doubt, it is the the steering committee of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School which decides whether or not an application for membership will be accepted.
