Buddy Programme for new international doctoral students of the PHGS
What is the PHGS Buddy Programme?
The aim of the buddy program is for experienced doctoral researchers at the PHGS to support newcomers from abroad, and pass along their personal experiences to them.
Who can participate?
All international doctoral researchers of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School and those who are planning to become members can participate in the buddy programme.
What services does the programme offer?
The initial contact between a new doctoral researcher and their buddy usually takes place via e-mail before or shortly after the newcomer arrives in Hamburg. The support of a buddy may include, for example, accompanying the newcomer to the initial contact points at DESY and/or the University of Hamburg, assistance if they are having communication difficulties, taking them on a tour of the city, barhopping or simply sharing experiences at the “social hour” events for doctoral researchers.
Do you want to have or become a buddy?
Finding or becoming a buddy is easy. Simply login to your PHGS account and click the tab "Service".
Prospective PHGS doctoral researchers who do not yet have access to the PHGS database, can send a request to graduateschool@pier-hamburg.de
Please note: Doctoral researchers who want to become somebody´s buddy will be contacted before a matching takes place in order to clarify whether becoming a buddy is a good fit at the moment.
How are the buddies brought together?
Buddy programmes offer an outstanding opportunity to do social and professional networking. When you register for the PHGS buddy programme, you can enter your wishes concerning your needs, partner's country of origin, languages, research fields and hobbies (this is true for the one who is looking for a buddy as well as for the one who wants to become someone's buddy). The PHGS coordinators try to make suitable matches based on this information.
