Two fellow members from our PIER Helmholtz Graduate School (PHGS), Nur and Mahdi, talked to us about their experiences with our program, their work on the Science Campus Bahrenfeld and living in Hamburg.

Nur Zulaiha Jomhari came from Malaysia to Hamburg to pursue her doctoral studies. She completed her doctorate in Particle Physics in 2022 in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) group at DESY. Her dissertation with the title “Measurement of Total and Differential Charm Cross Sections at 7 TeV with the CMS Detector” was supervised by Achim Geiser and Elisabetta Gallo at the Universität Hamburg. Currently, she works in the DESY Maschine Strahlkontrollen (MSK) group as a research scientist. Read the interview…

Mahdi Mohammadi Bidhendi started his PhD at DESY in the research group FS-FLASH-D in 2021. His dissertation focuses on the Characterization of temporal properties of free-electron laser pulses and is supervised by Stefan Düsterer and Ulrike Früling. Previously, he came from Iran to Germany and completed his Master’s degree at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Optical Engineering before moving to Hamburg to continue his academic career.
