Summer in the Science City
From the beginning of June to the end of August, seven undergraduate students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will spend their summer in different UHH and DESY research groups to gain hands-on research experience in their different fields of study.
As part of a collaboration between PIER and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), seven MIT students have started their internship in research groups at the Clusters of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” and "Quantum Universe". Bianca Hanley, Emily Chen, Merlin Gogolin, Rashedul Islam, Shreya Mogulothu, Sophie Vulpe and Yongao Hu had to go through a demanding selection process at MIT and were finally assigned to the CUI and QU working groups. The MIT students will now spend three months gaining insights into the clusters' pioneering research projects and carrying out their own small projects.
The program is organized by PIER in collaboration with the MIT-Germany Program. It started in 2019 with seed funding from the Hamburg Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts (BWFGB). Since then, eight highly motivated MIT students have completed internships in Hamburg research groups. With the help of the two Clusters of Excellence CUI and Quantum Universe that provide the funding for the seven internships in 2024, PIER is now continuing this successful international collaboration.
