PIER MIT Student Internships 2025

NEWS | 25 July 2025 | International / MIT / Research

From the beginning of June to the end of August, six undergraduate students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are spending their summer in Hamburg research groups to gain hands-on experience in research.

As part of a collaboration between PIER and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), six MIT students are currently interning with research groups at Hamburg’s renowned Clusters of Excellence, “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter (CUI:AIM)” and “Quantum Universe (QU).”

Elliott Chalcraft, Luke Kelly, Borna Perkovic, Candace Ramirez, Berkan Tarak, and Alan Vazquez successfully navigated a competitive selection process at MIT and have been assigned to research teams within CUI and QU. Over the span of three months, the interns are gaining valuable insights into the groundbreaking research conducted at these Clusters and are also developing their own small-scale research projects.

The program is organized by PIER in collaboration with the MIT-Germany Program. Since its inception in 2019, a total of 21 highly motivated MIT students have participated in internships with Hamburg-based research teams. Thanks to the generous support from the Clusters of Excellence CUI:AIM and QU, which provided funding for the 2025 internships, PIER is pleased to continue this successful collaboration between Hamburg and MIT.
