Photon science

As a research location, Hamburg boasts a globally unique constellation of complementary expertise in the following closely interrelated fields: laser physics, quantum optics, short-time physics, X-ray physics and atomic and molecular physics. All of these fields are heavily involved in photon research. Together, DESY and Universität Hamburg are conducting a series of very innovative research projects involving new sources of light and lasers. The storage ring-based synchrotron radiation source PETRA III (which is planned to be complemented by the ultimate 3D X-ray microscope for nanoresearch in the near future) as well as the FLASH and European XFEL free-electron lasers play an important role in the close collaboration between the two institutions.
