Infection and structural biology

In Hamburg, biomedical research has strongly focused on structural biology for many years now.The University of Hamburg and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) conduct infection biology research that is devoted specifically to host-pathogen interactions. The pooling of the university’s capabilities with those of non-university research centres in the Hamburg metropolitan area has created an internationally outstanding research network whose unique methodology is further strengthened by unparalleled pioneering technology that uses DESY’s synchrotron and laser radiation sources. Since 2017, research in infection and structural biology on Bahrenfeld campus converges in the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB). It combines the expertise of the excellent Hamburg research capacities in the life sciences with the world-class research infrastructure in Bahrenfeld.
